Black Lives Matter: Sojourner Truth’s famous speech “Ain’t I A Woman?”

Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Bomfree, was a preacher, abolitionist, women’s rights activist, and author, and was enslaved until she escaped to freedom in1827. As part of her activism, she traveled and spoke about her experiences as a Black woman and a slave. At the 1851 Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, Truth gave one of her most famous speeches, “Ain’t I A Woman?”. Two versions of the speech exist where she challenged the notions of gender and racial inequality and inferiority.
