Black Lives Matter: Celebrating Kwanzaa

In the coming weeks, many families around the country will recognize Kwanzaa, an annual celebration of African American culture, held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. Professor Maulana Karenga, PhD, created Kwanzaa in 1966 during the aftermath of the Watts Riots to “give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and give Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society.” The Kwanzaa celebration often includes songs and dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large traditional meal.
