Last week, U.S. Congressman John Lewis died at age 80. An acclaimed civil rights activist, he was chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966. Rep. Lewis spoke to School of Medicine students in a course on moral leadership in 2019. Other notable appearances include a Fresh Air interview, where he stated: “My parents told me… not to get in the way, not to make any noise.” But for Lewis, the call to serve fulfilled a nation’s dream for equity and justice.
